Habit and a routine both are regular, repeated actions. But while habits run on autopilot through the subconscious mind whereas routines are intentional. Routines need deliberate practice and effort. But a habit happens with little or no conscious thought.
For instance, daily exercise requires intention and effort. It won’t run automatically. The same is true for gratitude. You’re not going to start gratitude on autopilot.
Unlike habits, routines are uncomfortable and require a concerted effort. Waking up early to run every morning or meditating for 10 minutes every night, for instance, are rituals that initially are hard to keep up. On the other hand, habits are so ingrained in our daily lives that it feels strange not to do them. Imagine not brushing your teeth immediately after getting up or not drinking a cup of tea with breakfast. If these are habits you have already formed, avoiding them might even feel bad.
For a routine to become a habit, the behavior will need to happen with little or no thought. For instance, let’s say you add drinking green juice to your morning routine. You can consider it a habit if you wake up and make green juice every day without thinking about it. But if it requires effort to make green juice, it is routine.
In my book Building Habits, I have explained many tools and techniques to build good habits.
